Tijuana has long been a melting pot of musical innovation, and Joheel Rodmar is at the forefront of this new wave of talent redefining the city’s sound. As a gifted musician, singer, composer, and producer, Rodmar has been immersed in the world of music since the age of 13. Now, he is not only creating his own music but also shaping the careers of local and independent artists, helping them elevate their craft to new heights.
Joheel’s approach to music is both deeply personal and revolutionary, blending genres such as bolero, corridos tumbados, and romantic ballads. His first song, Estrellas Bipolares, written at 13, was released in 2024, showing an enduring testament to his creative evolution.
INTERVIEW WITH JOHEEL RODMAR
In this interview with Visión Music Magazine, Joheel shared his musical journey, which began in an unexpected place: Lucha Libre. Fascinated by the storytelling and drama of wrestling, he found himself drawn to the power of narrative and emotion. However, instead of stepping into the ring, he channeled that passion into songwriting and production.
When did your passion for music start?
It actually started as a kid, while watching Lucha Libre. I loved their storytelling and used to write down the list of fighters, locations and times. Instead of playing with my brothers to be a luchador, I used to play how to be a producer and imagine those dramatic scenes with other fighters in my head. I knew then that I loved writing stories, feeling those emotions, and entertaining, so I asked myself how to do all these things without becoming a luchador. That’s how I started with music.
I loved The Beatles so much that I started looking into forming a band, that’s when I created one with my brothers. At age 13, I started composing, and that first song I wrote I actually launched last year. It’s called “Estrellas Bipolares” and If you listen to the lyrics closely you will know that a teen wrote it. This musical process that started in my early years has been quite fun.
Who are your musical heroes?
I used to listen to The Beatles, Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley, all the big ones! And sang their music karaoke-style.
Can you take us on a trip through your creative process?
I usually write about love or heartbreak, and about sensitive situations. I don’t recall where I usually start but I know I have something in my head that needs to get out. So I start by putting those feelings into notes on my piano.
How does your music continue to defy the establishment?
A lot of artists from Tijuana have the vision of creating something different, to break through the noise and develop a sound that’s part of the identity of the city. Tijuana has really good elements that help local musicians transmit something unique to the world. I also have to recognize the singers and bands who helped create a roadway for the new talent.
What do you think of the music landscape in this social media world?
Today, the things you have to do to share your music could either be more difficult or easier, but always fun. I have someone who helps me record videos and with content ideas. No matter how popular you are in social media, talent will always win, talent and good songs. Because good melodies will last through time.
What advice would you give young artists?
Be genuine, always. Don’t try to follow trends, because whatever you make that’s unique, is what people will remember. People like to hear stories that come from the heart.
Are we expecting new collaborations this 2025?
I have new releases which include collaborations with local musicians. These songs have already been recorded, but many times, independent artists lose motivation due to the fact that it takes too long and they start working on something else.
However, this 2025 is a year of great collaborations. Working with independent artists from Tijuana, Guadalajara, México City, and creating a lot of new stuff. I will release a song with DELIAN, an artist and friend based in LA who has done pretty cool music with Sofía Reyes. I also have other collaborations about to close but I can’t say much about those… Yet!
You are also a talented music producer and composer. Any upcoming projects we should be on the lookout for?
I’m always producing music for new artists. Helping them develop their own stamp that they can include as part of their essence. Soon, I will be heading to Los Angeles to develop music for Adriana Ríos.
I have known Adriana for a while. We were those artists from Tijuana who started a movement, and she was one of the strongest singers. Seeing her today, demonstrating her unique talent, captivating audiences, including me in her production process, It is one of the best moments of this year for me. I know we will make amazing songs!
In an era where social media has reshaped the music industry, Rodmar believes that authenticity and talent will always triumph over fleeting trends. His advice to young artists is simple yet profound: be genuine, stay true to your essence, and create music that speaks from the heart.
Looking ahead to 2025, Rodmar has an exciting lineup of collaborations, and a major production endeavor with powerhouse singer Adriana Ríos. His upcoming projects promise to amplify the independent music scene in Tijuana, proving that the city’s musical renaissance continues to thrive.
